Early ratings make or break your app — how to earn your first 5-stars
Ratings are the single biggest lever on store discovery when you're new. A handful of 5-stars versus a couple of 1-stars decides whether the store ever shows your app to anyone.
Why ratings matter more than you think
Store ranking and featuring weight rating and recency heavily. And users simply won't tap a 3.2-star app. Your earliest ratings set the trajectory for everything that follows.
Ask at the moment of delight
Don't prompt on launch or at random — you'll catch people before they care. Prompt right after a win: the user just completed your core action successfully, ideally the second or third time. Use the native in-app review prompt so it's frictionless.
Catch unhappy users before the store does
Add a gentle in-app "How's it going?" check. Route frustrated users to a feedback form (where you can actually help), and happy users to the rating prompt. It's a standard, store-allowed pattern that quietly protects you from one-star drive-bys.
Never fake it
No bought reviews, no review rings. Stores detect and penalize them, and it can get your app removed. Real early ratings compound; fake ones are a liability.
Aim for a base of genuine 5-stars
Early on, the goal is a solid base of real positive ratings before you tune anything else — a good rule of thumb is 300+ genuine 5-stars before you start optimizing monetization.
FoxDog wires the in-app review prompt to the right trigger and adds feedback capture — so you build a real ratings base from day one.
